Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Bra

As bras age and undergo regular wear and washing (read about proper bra washing here), they naturally lose their supportiveness. Here are some signs that indicate your bra may be losing its support:

  1. Straps Digging In: If you find that your bra straps are digging into your shoulders, it may be a sign that the elastic in the straps has worn out. This can cause discomfort and indicate a loss of support.
  2. Band Riding Up: A properly fitting bra band should sit parallel to the floor and provide a firm yet comfortable grip around your ribcage. If you notice that the band starts to ride up your back throughout the day, it could mean that it has lost its elasticity and is no longer offering adequate support.
  3. Cups Losing Shape: Bras with molded cups or underwires should maintain their shape and contour to your breasts. If you notice that the cups are wrinkling, puckering, or not holding their shape as they used to, it suggests that the bra is losing its supportive structure.
  4. Spillage or Bulging: If you experience spillage or bulging of breast tissue over the cups or from the sides, it indicates that the bra is no longer providing the necessary support. This can occur when the elastic around the cups or under the arms has stretched out.
  5. Loose Hook-and-Eye Closures: The hook-and-eye closures at the back of the bra provide adjustability. Over time, the repeated stretching and fastening can cause the closures to become loose or lose their grip. If you find that you're consistently using the tightest hook setting and the band still feels loose, it may be time to replace the bra.
  6. Loss of Comfort: Bras should provide comfort and support throughout the day. If you notice that your bra is becoming increasingly uncomfortable, causing irritation or digging into your skin, it may be due to the loss of supportiveness as the bra ages.

It's important to note that the lifespan of a bra can vary depending on factors such as quality, frequency of wear, and care. However, if you notice several of these signs, it’s time to invest in a new bra.

Lingerie Care

Lingerie can be a tricky thing to care for, especially when dealing with fine craftsmanship, luxurious bras, or high-quality materials that can’t wash with other garments.

Do’s:

  • When in doubt, hand wash with warm, not hot, water.
  • Dry naturally - hang up gently to avoid wrinkles.
  • Use a small amount of Soak Wash soap and gently massage your lingerie. No rinse necessary (Soak samples included with every online purchase). Click the link to view our Soak Wash products available for purchase.
  • Use a reusable laundry bag to keep your undergarments separate from other dirty garments. Click the link to view laundry bags available for purchase.
  • For loungewear, lay flat or hang gently to dry.
  • For loungewear, machine wash on warm, gentle settings. Hand wash advised.
  • For 100% silk products, dry clean, cold wash, and ironing ok. Handwashing may change the luster of silk.

Dont's:

  • Wash your lingerie in a washing machine. This can damage the materials, colors, embroideries, or cause harmful rips.
  • Tumble dry. Lingerie should always dry naturally and be hung up carefully away from other garments.
  • Iron.
  • Dry clean.
  • Bleach.
